The time it takes to get a private pilot license can vary greatly and is dependant upon how much time you can dedicate to learning to fly. On average, it takes between 4 and 6 months. A minimum of 40 hours of flight instruction is required (the average being around 55). Ground training and home study will be necessary to pass the written and oral exams. Training is worked into your own schedule, so you can fly in the morning, during your lunch break, after work, or on the weekend - whatever works best for you.
Typically, flight training is paid for by the flight hour, and per hour of instruction. You can pay as you go, or put a predetermined amount into an account. On average, a student will spend between $4000 and $6500 on his/her private pilot license. You can significantly reduce the total by flying frequently and using an effective training course outline.
A logbook, headsets, and the required books and study materials. Additional supplies, such as charts, may be necessary as well. Supplies are available for purchase or order at Uvalde Flight Center.
You must be 16 years old to start training, and 17 in order to get your Private Pilot License. You must be able to read, speak and understand the English language. A routine medical exam with an aviation medical examiner is required before the student’s first solo.
After your Private Pilot License, you may decide to continue flying. Additional licenses and ratings include: multi-engine rating, instrument rating (allowing you to fly in the clouds), commercial pilot certificate. Special training is needed for some aircraft, such as tailwheel, complex or high performance aircraft. |
